Each week we will meet for 75-minutes (beginner classes) or 90-minutes (advanced classes). You'll learn one choreography in the month which may be a traditional (kahiko) or a modern ('auana) style. During our time we will drill the steps for that choreography and each week we will work on a section of the choreography. Each class will include a warm-up, cool down, and a mind-body-spiritual practice at the end. You'll learn Hawaiian words (if the song is in Hawaiian) as we go along our hula journey together.
The monthly in-depth hula studies program runs from September-April (8 months). Some months have only three classes whereas others have four depending upon holidays.
If you pay by the month, you'll also receive a practice video of the choreography and handouts. (Practice videos and handouts are not provided for single drop-ins.)
If a class time is full it will be shown below as full for that month. Current monthly students will have first choice of day/time for the following month. Any remaining spaces will open to the public on the 20th of the month prior.
If joining for the month, payment confirms your spot weekly for that day/time. Payments for Morehead City classes can be made to Amanda via Paypal or Venmo (amandatoddphd) for first time students. Returning students receive a $5 discount if payment is by cash/check.
For serious students, traditional hula skirt, p'au is required after your first three months. (These are not included in the tuition and may be purchased through various online sites or you may make your own. No color requirements, select a fabric pattern and color that is you!)
Ages 18 and up.
Each class time listed below covers the same material for that month.
Classes in Morehead City are held at
103 South 11th St. Suite B Morehead City, NC.
Registration is handled on this page with Redheaded Hula Girl. If space is available for that day/time slot the PayPal options will show on the Current Schedule page. You can also submit payment by Venmo.
As a active consistent monthly student, you'll also have the opportunity to perform with Emerald 'Āina Hula Dancers.
Performing with the group requires you to purchase your own attire, adornments, and any associated travel fees which are additional fees on top of the monthly program. We do get group discounts and try to keep the attire and adornments reasonable. You'll also be expected and required to attend practices outside of class time and rehearsals for upcoming performances. Performances are usually in the spring and summer months.
Most of our performances at festivals are in the spring or summer. We occasionally do performances at assisted living facilities and for schools as well throughout the year. You can decide which type of performance you would like to do and which ones you might not want to. You have a choice when it comes to performing. You will be required to attend practices outside of class time for whichever events you would like to do. If you do not attend practices you will not be able to perform.
We may also have guest instructors or special workshops throughout the year with Kumu's for an additional fee that you'll be specially invited to!
