Experience the Heart of Hula: An Introduction to Hawaiian Hula Dance

In this 90-minute workshop, you'll explore the strength, power, and grace of Hawaiian Hula and discover that it’s more than just a dance. Hula is a sacred way of storytelling that reflects the natural world. The swaying of trees, the rolling ocean waves, and the flight of birds all come alive through the hands, hips, and gestures of hula. During our time together, you'll explore two distinct styles: the ancient, traditional kahiko and the lively, fun vintage hapa-haole. By learning basic steps and easy choreographies, you'll take part in a low-impact dance that grounds the body, engages the mind, and lifts the spirit. No experience is needed, just come as you are. This special workshop will awaken your body to new yet ancient ways, assist you in slowing down, and help you find balance. You'll carry the spirit of aloha and the magical energy of hula with you long after the dance ends.

Experience the Heart of Hula: An Introduction to Hawaiian Hula Dance

Step into the playful charm of hapa-haole hula in this special two-hour workshop designed for beginners and dancers new to Hawaiian Hula. This style, popular from the 1930s to the 1950s, blends the softness of Hawaiian movement with vintage musical influences and is considered a subcategory of ‘auana (modern hula). You’ll learn one complete choreography set to a classic hapa-haole tune, starting with English and Hawaiian lyrics. Then, you’ll perform the dance to a lively contemporary version sung entirely in Hawaiian. The choreography features many signature gestures common throughout hula, offering a strong foundation for future exploration.

The class includes a full warm-up, 30 minutes of drills to build hula-specific technique, detailed choreography instruction, practice and refinement time, and a cool down stretch. Along the way, you’ll also learn Hawaiian words and cultural context to help you embody the story behind the movements during this unique period in hula’s history.

This low-impact, expressive dance combines joy with storytelling. With the sway of your hips, a smile on your face, and the spirit of aloha, you’ll leave feeling both energized and grounded, touched by the nostalgic beauty of hapa-haole hula.
