Hula is a Hawaiian movement practice and art used to tell a story and convey emotions. This longer class introduces this beautiful heart-filled practice. Hula is a wonderful way to connect with the body and heart through gentle and graceful movements of the hips and arms.
Those new to Hawaiian Hula and experienced dancers are welcome to these classes. This is an opportunity to try hula and to experience how Amanda teaches hula.
In the 90-minute class, students will receive a brief history lesson of Hawaiian Hula and an introduction to two styles of hula along with an understanding of the differences seen in lineages of hula. Students will learn and drill between seven and nine beginner hula steps and will be instructed on two easy choreographies at a minimum within different hula styles. You will learn something new and get a cardio workout, but this is a low impact activity.
One style shared during the class, is from the era of hula (1940's-1950's) that some may call the hapa-haole or Hollywood style. The second style students will experience is hula kahiko (traditional/ancient). Each is very different, and you'll leave with a better understanding of what you might see at resorts, luaus, and on TV.
You can wear regular workout clothes and come as you are. Also bring some water.

Hawaiian Hula Lite is a beginner-friendly class featuring slower choreography, graceful movements, and a relaxed pace. The focus is on learning, enjoying movement, and connecting with the spirit of hula rather than high-intensity exercise. This format is less cardio than the evening classes. We will focus on the same foundations, but our choreographies and pace will be slower.
This class is ideal for:
-Beginners with no dance experience
-Those returning to movement or beginning a fitness routine
-Adults of all ages, including those 55+
-Anyone looking for a gentle, low-impact form of movement
-Those who need to remain seated for all or part of class, as hula beautifully expresses stories through the hands and arms as well as the whole body
Over the weeks you'll:
-Learn foundational hula steps and hand motions
-Discover the meaning behind gestures and choreography
-Explore Hawaiian culture, history, and language
-Experience movement that encourages grace, presence, and connection
-Learn a complete beginner-friendly hula
Whether you're looking for gentle movement, a creative outlet, or simply something new to experience, this class offers a meaningful introduction to hula in a supportive and welcoming community.
