The hula series is offered in a 3, 4 or 6 week schedule depending upon venue and location. The series are always at a beginner level. Classes may be 60 or 75-minutes depending upon venue. Prices will also vary between venues. Typically venues handle the registration unless otherwise noted below. The series are usually run May-August in the off season of the hula school year or in different geographic areas than where classes are typically held.
In the 3-week series in each class, each week we will explore a different style of hula. The 3-week series is a really good introduction to show you the differences in each style although you will not be focused on learning a choreography in depth. One week we will explore hapa-haole, another week will explore traditional (kahiko), and the third week will explore modern hula ('auana).
The 4-week series may vary in which style of choreographies are taught (traditional kahiko , modern 'auana, or a hapa-haole hula). You will learn one beginner choreography in the 4 week series. In the 6-week series you will learn at a minimum two choreographies.
Each class will include a warm-up, 30 minutes of drilling steps, choreography practice, and a cool down/stretch. Practice videos and notes are not provided in the series. This is a great low impact cardio workout and you'll also stimulate your mind all while learning a little about Hawaiian history, culture, and about beautiful places on the islands. If you decide you want more, consider joining the hula studies program where we go deeper and you also have the opportunity to perhaps eventually perform with us.
Space is limited depending upon venue, but this will be a more intimate learning experience than the workshops but not as in depth as the hula studies.
