Beginning with the 2025-2026 year, there will be two different options for enrolling in the hula studies program with Amanda in two different geographic areas! Dance space with mirrors is hard to come by in the area and Amanda is only able to be in a limited number of towns offering classes weekly. With the interests in taking classes growing, hopefully this will be a good solution for all moving forward!
The in-depth hula studies program runs for 9 months with November or December learning a Hawaiian holiday hula. Some months have only two or three weekly classes whereas others have four depending upon holidays. For the 2025-2026 year, the monthly hula in-depth classes will run from September-May with October and December meeting for two weeks. You can start at the beginning of any month.
All women 18+ welcome in the beginner's class. This builds the foundation.
The intermediate class requires one year at a minimum of beginner level hula with Amanda.
Advanced level is by invitation only after two years of hula with Amanda or with previous proven experience.
Each class will include a warm-up, cool down, and a mind-body practice at the end. You'll learn Hawaiian words (if the song is in Hawaiian) as we go along our hula journey together.
Some early choreographies may repeat with hulas learned in different summer series. This will help you fine tune them and even advanced dancers can always return to learning the foundational hulas.
You can skip months, but in order to perform certain hula numbers you must have attended that month's class covering that hula, or you'll need to schedule a private lesson to catch up. Some choreographies may require two or more private lessons.
You'll also receive a practice video of the choreography and handouts. (Practice videos and handouts are not provided for series.)
A traditional hula skirt (p'au) is required after your first three months. (These are not included in the tuition and may be purchased through various online sites, or you may make your own. No color requirements, select a fabric pattern and color that is you!)
After dancing for six consecutive months, you may be eligible to begin performing hulas with the group that you have learned if you desire. Some students want to be part of the school learning but not perform. Performance is at the discretion and approval of the instructor.

Amanda will be offering the hula studies program in Morehead City on Monday nights. Each week we will meet for 75-minutes (beginners and intermediates) or 90-minutes (advanced classes). You'll learn one choreography in the month which may be a traditional (kahiko) or a modern ('auana) style. During our time we will drill the steps for that choreography and each week we will work on a section of the choreography.
Drop ins will be allowed the first week of the month only. After, drop ins will not be allowed in the weekly classes.
Payments for the Morehead City classes will be handled through Bodhi Yoga (Yoga on Bridges) website. Typically, registration will open two weeks before classes begin for the following month.

As I hope you'll discover - this is more than just learning hula! It is an investment in your mind-body-spiritual being.
The 4-week months or 3-hour workshop format $60 (September, November, January, February, March, April, and May)
October and December will be 2-weeks/2-hour workshop format $30
Total investment if you attend all $480. You'll pay by the month. Every place will be the same fee.
Practice pa'u skirts, attire/adornments for performances, and hula implements are separate cost and not included. I do not teach hula with implements until Year 2 - when you know you are a serious dancer ready to invest and purchase implements to use.

If submitting a payment by Venmo please include your name and that you'll be attending the online class. Please include your email address if registering for an online class so I can send you the link for class. You should receive an email confirmation directly from Amanda within 24 hours. If you do not, please reach out.

As an active consistent hula studies student, you'll also have the opportunity to perform with Emerald 'Āina Hula Dancers. Once you have danced for six consecutive months in the program you may be eligible to perform if interested. If you are interested after your three months of attending classes, please speak with Amanda. Not all hula studies students perform, but many are involved in different ways.
Performing with the group requires you to purchase your own attire, adornments, and any associated travel fees which are additional fees on top of the monthly program. We do get group discounts and try to keep the attire and adornments reasonable.
You'll also be expected and required to attend practices outside of class time and rehearsals for upcoming performances. Most of our performances at festivals are in the spring or summer. We occasionally do performances at assisted living facilities and for schools as well throughout the year. You can decide which type of performance you would like to do and which ones you might not want to. You have a choice when it comes to the types of performances you might do.
You will be required to attend practices outside of class time for whichever events you would like to do. If you do not attend practices, you will not be able to perform. The instructor has final say if you are able to perform certain dances as many factors are considered beyond technique. Outdoor festivals in the Coastal heat in particular are a factor in some dancers' abilities, health wise, to do especially with our faster hula numbers.
We may also have guest instructors or special workshops throughout the year with Kumu's for an additional fee that you'll be specially invited to as serious hula dancers!
