school year" runs September-May and classes are available for women (wahine) and kids (keiki) in Morehead City, North Carolina or virtually. In the hula school, you really immerse yourself in learning Hawaiian Hula, the language, mythology, history and more! Classes are held weekly with the exception of holidays.
Beginner adult classes learn one choreography each month and the style of hula varies throughout the year. Beginner classes are 60-minutes. Beginner classes always include 30 minutes of drilling technique to build a good foundation. All women 18+ welcome in the beginner's class. This builds the foundation.
Drop-ins are allowed in the beginner classes.
Intermediate adult classes also learn one choreography each month and the style of hula varies throughout the year. Intermediate classes are 75-minutes. Drop-ins are not allowed in the intermediate classes. Intermediate classes are by invite only for those dancers that have danced hula for a year or more with Amanda or another instructor. Dancers must be able to demonstrate the appropriate level of skill required for intermediate choreography which requires a solid foundation of technique.
Advanced level is by invitation only after two years of hula with Amanda or with previous proven experience.
Starting in September two levels of keiki classes will be offered based on age and/or skill level determined by the instructors. A 30-minute class for 3–7-year-olds and a 45-minute class for 8–18-year-olds. In some instances, teenage dancers that show excellent technique and skill may be invited to join the adult beginner classes with parental agreement. We have several mothers and daughters that dance together as well as aunts and nieces!
The 2026-2027 hula school year calendar will be published in late June.
Each class will include a warm-up, cool down, and a mind-body practice at the end. You'll learn Hawaiian words (if the song is in Hawaiian) as we go along our hula journey together.
You can skip months, but in order to perform certain hula numbers you must have attended that month's class covering that hula, or you'll need to schedule a private lesson to catch up. Some choreographies may require two or more private lessons.
You'll also receive a practice video of the choreography and handouts.
A traditional hula skirt (p'au) is required after your first three months. (These are not included in the tuition and may be purchased through various online sites, or you may make your own. No color requirements, select a fabric pattern and color that is you!)
After dancing for six consecutive months, you may be eligible to begin performing hulas with the group that you have learned if you desire. Some students want to be part of the school learning but not perform. Performance is at the discretion and approval of the instructor.
As I hope you'll discover - this is more than just learning hula! It is an investment in your mind-body-spiritual being.
The 4-week month beginner level is $70.
The 4-week month intermediate level is $85
You'll pay by the month.
Practice pa'u skirts, attire/adornments for performances, and hula implements are separate cost and not included. I do not teach hula with implements until Year 2 - when you know you are a serious dancer ready to invest and purchase implements to use.

As an active consistent hula studies student, you'll also have the opportunity to perform with Emerald 'Āina Hula Dancers. Once you have danced for six consecutive months in the program you may be eligible to perform if interested. If you are interested after your three months of attending classes, please speak with Amanda. Not all hula studies students perform, but many are involved in different ways.
Performing with the group requires you to purchase your own attire, adornments, and any associated travel fees which are additional fees on top of the monthly program. We do get group discounts and try to keep the attire and adornments reasonable.
You'll also be expected and required to attend practices outside of class time and rehearsals for upcoming performances. Most of our performances at festivals are in the spring or summer. We occasionally do performances at assisted living facilities and for schools as well throughout the year. You can decide which type of performance you would like to do and which ones you might not want to. You have a choice when it comes to the types of performances you might do.
You will be required to attend practices outside of class time for whichever events you would like to do. If you do not attend practices, you will not be able to perform. The instructor has final say if you are able to perform certain dances as many factors are considered beyond technique. Outdoor festivals in the Coastal heat in particular are a factor in some dancers' abilities, health wise, to do especially with our faster hula numbers.
We may also have guest instructors or special workshops throughout the year with Kumu's for an additional fee that you'll be specially invited to as serious hula dancers!
